Piet van den Bergh lived and worked in Den Haag, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, and briefly also in Wassenaar, Katwijk and Leiden. Later he continued his studies under famous landscape painters Théophile de Bock and Willem Maris. Van den Bergh continued to paint and draw animals and landscapes in the style of the so called Hague School. He was a member of “The Hague’s Art Circle” and the group “The Independents” in Amsterdam. According to a contemporary description, his submitted painting Boys Playing Football showed some boys playing soccer on a wasteland, with the city in the background.
As the artist is listed in the 1928 art catalogue only with his initials as P. A. van den Berg, he could be confused with Pieter Arie van den Berg, an amateur water color painter, and a student of his father, another amateur painter. He was mostly active in Loosduinen, near Den Haag. Like Piet van den Bergh, he was born and died in Den Haag (21.11.1893-26.12.1966).
