Cornelis van Steenwijk was a Dutch graphic artist, painter, etcher, engraver (printmaker) and draftsman. Until 1914 he lived in Amsterdam, where he studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten. During his time at the Rijksakademie he settled in the nearby city of Haarlem, where he worked until 1928. In 1921 he joined the Association of Visual Artists “The Independents” in Amsterdam. Van Steenwijk was a regular participant in the group’s exhibitions in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. He emigrated to the United States in 1929, where he last lived in San Diego.
The boxer portrayed on his submitted painting could be Martinus Vige (1890-?). In the early 1920s, Vige had six fights as a professional light-heavyweight, including one against Battling Siki (see Isaac Israëls).
