Dutch painter Kees van Waning was known for townscape and coastal paintings. His nephew Martin van Waning (1887-1972) also became a well-known sculptor and painter. Kees painted watercolors and drawings of landscapes, cityscapes, harbors, rivers, and seas in an impressionistic style. He frequently travelled to Belgium and France for study trips. The tracked down painting, which comes closest to the submitted Yachting on the North Sea is Zeilboten op zee. This is an oil painting on canvas created in 1909 (30 x 50 cm).
