Dutchman Cornelis Vreedenburgh learned to paint from his father Gerrit (1849-1922), also a painter, and mostly painted water landscapes. During a study trip to Palestine and the Holy Land, he produced numerous sketches and studies in watercolor and oil. Vreedenburgh started his career producing watercolors, drawings and engravings of cityscapes and landscapes. Later living in Amsterdam, he became known for his paintings of the picturesque canals. For most of his life he lived in Laren and was a member of several Amsterdam art associations. His younger brother Herman (1887-1957) was also known as a painter.
