Gerard Westermann was a Dutch landscape, still-life and portrait painter, schooled in expressionism. His subjects were portraits, figures, horses and still lifes, but his most famous paintings were of horses. Westermann taught at the State Academy in Amsterdam from 1918-45, where he had studied, and he received a number of prestigious awards. He occasionally worked under the pseudonym Johs. Labasky. Westerman earned the bronze medal for his drawing Horseman at the 1932 Art Competitions in Los Angeles within the category Paintings, Drawings and Water Colors.
