Biography

Jaap Weyand was a Dutch graphic artist, glass artist, painter and draftsman. He studied at the School of Applied Arts and the National Academy of Fine Arts, both in Amsterdam. He mainly produced landscapes, portraits, still lifes and self-portraits in the style of the Bergen School influenced by Cubism. Weyand lived and worked in Amsterdam and Bergen. His son Vincent was murdered in 1945 at the age of 24 in the Buchenwald concentration camp as a “half-Jew”.

In 1928 Weyand presented a Project for a Stained Glass Window and the Portrait of Colonel C. W. de Visser. The de Visser couple were among Weyand’s main patrons, and he also designed stained glass windows for their house. The portrait of Carel de Visser (1863-1943), who was a senior naval officer, showed him at the helm of his yacht. Carel later became an ardent sailor. He and his wife Maria Wilhelmina Carolina (née Roelofs, 1881-?), both had a keen interest in modern art. De Visser’s father had made a fortune with shares in Koninklijke Olie (later Royal Dutch Shell ).
