Scottish painter Alan Gourley studied in Glasgow and Edinburgh, but then moved to South Africa to teach at Johannesburg from 1932-37. Later, he went to Paris for further studies. After World War II, during which he trained camouflage painters, he returned to Great Britain and mainly painted landscapes from various countries. Gourley also designed stage sets, stained glass windows, carpets, and film sets. He was president of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. The identity of the portrayed Paul Hahn is unclear, possibly German painter Paul Gustav Hahn (1883-1952).
