Biography

Benjamin Brown was a well-known landscape painter and etcher and was often referred to as a pioneer of Impressionism in California. At first he was a photographer, although he later studied painting in Paris at Académie Julian. He first studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. He started his art career as a painter of portraits and still lifes. Eventually he settled in Pasadena. Brown was also a member of the jury in 1932; nevertheless he entered the art competition with his painting without any restrictions.
