Nessa Cohen was an American sculptor of German and Russian heritage. She was a long-time student and life member at the Art Students League in New York. There she studied, amongst others, under James Earle Fraser, also a 1928 Art Olympian, as well as later in Paris. For the American Museum of Natural History, Cohen also studied with other artists six Native American tribes, capturing their clothes and features, which resulted in her best-known work Sunrise. Cohen was a member of the National Sculpture Society and traveled frequently to Italy and France. Her 60 cm bronze Hopi Relay Runner was created in 1912 as part of her studies in the southwestern US.
