Leonard Craske came to America in 1910 and made his home in Boston and in the nearby coastal town of East Gloucester. He first studied medicine, but then became an actor and studied drawing and sculpting. He was trained by sculptor Paul Raphael Montford and by the London artists’ Dicksee family. His best remembered work is the Fisherman’s Memorial at Gloucester, Massachusetts. Craske’s entry portrayed Maribel Vinson, a bronze medalist in women’s figure skating in Los Angeles in 1932. While she was standing as a model, the idea for a new type of pirouette was born.
