Lewis Daniel was an American illustrator, etcher and wildlife painter inspired by the Bible. He was particularly effective as an illustrator, especially for books by the famous American poet Walt Whitman, notably his best known work Leaves of Grass. Daniel studied at the National Academy of Design and Cooper Union in New York. He received the Eyre Medal for Prints from the Academy of Fine Arts, and was a member of the National Academy of Design and the Society of American Etchers. Daniel received numerous awards for his works, which he carried out in a number of different techniques. He lost his life in 1952 in a traffic accident in Illinois, while he, his wife, and his son were driving from New York to Montana for a family vacation. He signed his works as Lewis C. Daniel.
