Randall Davey

Randall Vernon Davey was an influential impressionist painter and graphic artist of landscapes, still lifes, horse racing, polo scenes, and nude acts. He initially studied architecture at Cornell before devoting himself to painting. Davey was trained in New York and Europe. Finally settling in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he made his living as a polo teacher and breeder of polo horses, and was a very accomplished polo player himself. Beginning in 1920, he taught at numerous art schools in various states. Davey was also a pioneer as a race car driver, but tragically died in a traffic accident in 1964.

According to the 1932 catalog, his entry was an oil painting or watercolor. Davey depicted numerous motifs of horse racing and the title Horse Race is very general. The most likely candidate is the oil painting In the Stretch (oil on board, 36 x 51 cm), which was also created in this period.
