American painter and illustrator Gerald Sargent Foster was an avid sailor who often depicted yacht races. He stayed very close on the realistic details – even in high-speed yacht races. Foster was a student at the American Academy in Roma and the National Academy of Design. Foster painted murals for the Works Projects Administration for the United States Post Offices in Freehold, Cranford, and Millburn, New Jersey; and Poughkeepsie, New York.
In 1933, the Andover Townsman newspaper wrote about the submitted painting: “Another attractive yachting picture is The First Mark by Gerald Foster, one of the younger group of artists. This painting was first exhibited at the Macbeth Gallery, New York, and has received high commendation from critics.”
