Swedish-American sculptor Carl Hallsthammar was born as Karl Emil Andersson in Sweden, where he started his studies in Mora/Dalarna. He immigrated into the United States in June 1923, where he changed his name to Carl Hallsthammar, in honor of his hometown Hallstahammar, but with one “a” missing. He settled in Chicago, Illinois, where he completed his studies at the Art Institute and founded his own school for wood carving. Hallthammar became a specialist in wood sculptures (portrait busts and statues) and relief carvings.
