Harold Shurtleff

American historian and architect Harold Shurtleff was a year 1906 Harvard alumni who was also interested in painting. During World War I he served as an instructor at various officers’ training camps and was discharged with the rank of major. He helped to restore Colonial Williamsburg and is remembered today for his self-illustrated book The Log Cabin Myth: A Study of the Early Dwellings of the English Colonists in North America although actually only a part-time artist. Shurtleff was the long-time director of research at Colonial Williamsburg. Amongst others, he was a member of the New York Beaux Arts Club.
