Carl Sprinchorn was born in Sweden. At age 16, he emigrated to New York. Sprinchorn was a landscape painter, who incorporated modernism and realism into his work. He studied and worked with Robert Henri (1865-1929) for a decade at the Art Students League.
A longtime friend of Maine-born painter Marsden Hartley (1877-1943), Sprinchorn first visited Northern Maine in 1919 and returned to spend much of his time in the Patten/Shin Pond area from 1937-52, where he literally lived amongst the woodsmen and the farmers. It was there that he formed many deep relationships which helped inspire his painting and his writing. His health forced his departure in 1952, as he settled in Selkirk, New York, living there until his death in 1971.
