Jay Martin was from a ski jumping family, with his brother Jerry ski jumping for the US at the 1971 Winter Olympics. Jay was the US champion in ski jumping in 1968 and was given the Mittelstad Award for ski jumping that year from the US Ski Association. Jay Martin later became a ski jump judge, working with the Minneapolis Ski Club.
