Larry Martin grew up in Homer, Alaska, and later attended Fort Lewis College in Colorado, graduating in 1973. Martin was third in the 1971 US 15K Championships, and in 1975 placed second in the US 50K race. He settled back in his hometown of Homer after the 1972 Winter Olympics, where he has run a glass business and glass shop, and is a volunteer coach with the local high school ski team.
