Glenn Coleman was best known for his lithographs and paintings about New York urban street scenes and belonged to the second generation of the Ashcan School. He died at the early age of 45 years after struggling with financial problems for a long period, influenced by Cubism amidst changing art styles in the 1920s. He studied at the Industrial Art School in Indianapolis and in New York but also worked as an apprentice newspaper artist. In his later years he moved to Long Island and painted landscapes.
Coleman painted several pictures with harbor motifs. Listed simply as The Harbor, his entry was on loan from New York’s Downtown Gallery. In 1930, his painting Gloucester Harbor was exhibited in Venezia by this gallery. Painted in oil on canvas, it was sized 86.6 x 63.8 cm. Because his work was shown posthumously, it was entered ¬hors concours in 1932.
