Alexander Kruse

American painter Alexander Kruse was the son of German and Russian immigrants. He became an influential teacher at the Brooklyn Museum of Art School. In addition, he worked as an art critic for the “New York Post”. Kruse was the author of How to Draw and Paint which sold over 150,000 copies.

Kruse had studied in New York at the National Academy of Design. His oeuvre consisted mainly of etchings, drawings, and lithographs. He found his motifs mainly in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the neighborhood where he had grown up. East Side A.C. was a lithograph measuring 29.2 x 37.5 cm. This is a unique and whimsical work of one of Kruse’s favorite places in New York.
