Biography

Thor Martinsen had a lengthy playing career with the Norwegian ice hockey team IF Frisk Asker, earning him the nickname Mr Frisk. After playing for Skeid and Sparta Sarpsborg in the 1960s Martinsen then joined Frisk Asker in 1969 and remained at the club until 1980. Early in his career when he was with Skeid he was awarded with the Gullpucken in 1965 for being the best player in Norway.

Martinsen played in 113 matches for the Norwegian national team, including 13 editions of the World Championships and four Olympic Games. He made his Olympic début at the 1964 Innsbruck Games, playing in seven matches and scoring a goal in Norway’s 4–3 loss to Japan. He then represented Norway at the Games in Grenoble (1968), Sapporo (1972), and Lake Placid (1980), but did not score any more goals. From 1986 to 1988 Martinsen served as the head coach of Frisk Asker before being appointed an honorary member of the club in 2009.
