Gough’s first win as a youngster was a 44-yard race for under 16-year-olds at Islington Baths in 1889. He subsequently became a member of the Leander Swimming Club and was in their 6-man team that won the London Teams’ Championship in 1896. Gough won many team competitions with Leander, and also played for their water polo team. In 1901, he was the individual swimming champion of Hampstead.
