Although entered in the 1896 high hurdles, Fred Lord did not compete at the Athina Olympics. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Lord started the Lord Electric Company and had several patents, including one for anchoring tennis nets. His partner at his company was Tom Curtis, who won the 1896 110 hurdles gold medal.
