The 1912 “Sporting Life” Marathon from Windsor to Stamford Bridge was an Olympic trial. Lewis finished 11th. Along with Charlie Davenport, Samuel Raynes, George Day, and Arthur Townsend, however, Lewis was selected as one of reserves for the 1912 Olympic Marathon. Townsend subsequently got called into the team. Lewis had a fine reputation as a distance runner in the West Country and, in 1913, despite arriving at the very last minute, finished third in the Finchley Harriers 50 mile race at Stamford Bridge behind fellow Olympian Edgar Lloyd and W. J. Clark.
