Estonian August Elmik was entered as a member of the Russian team for the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm to compete in the 1,500 m run but did not start. He became a high school teacher in physical education in Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa. Elmik was active at the local theatre as an actor and music designer. In 1926, he was co-founder of the Saaremaa Merispordi Selts (Saaremaa Maritime Sports Society). Under the authoritarian rule of the by-then independent Estonia he was awarded the Order of the Cross of the Eagle in 1938.
With his wife Ksenja he had one son. In July 1941, he was arrested and deported. After being sentenced to death in April 1942, he was executed one month later in a prison camp in Irkutsk in Siberia.
