She started college at Pacific Lutheran University where she was on the swim team and later joined the crew team. She then rowed at UC Santa Barbara and finally at the University of Massachusetts (U Mass). At U Mass she led the eight to a silver medal at the NCAA meet in 1997 and was a two-time Atlantic 10 Champion in 1996 and 1997.
At a regatta in the Netherlands in 1995 Jones was hit by another shell, which punctured her spine and required surgery to enable her to walk again and continue rowing. She eventually competed in six World Championships and eight World Cup Finals. After completing her rowing career, Jones became director of rowing at Lake Stevens Rowing Club and later served as varsity assistant coach and director of operations at Clemson University.
