Biography

German sailor Ingo Borkowski won the silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the three-person keelboat (soling class) with sailing legend Jochen Schümann and Gunnar Bahr. The Germans narrowly lost the final race 4-3 against Denmark, with Jesper Bank at the helm. The German crew was then awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.

In 1997, Borkowski and crew won the European Championships and the European Match Race Cup. The following year they won the World Championships and European Match Race Cup again, and also the bronze medal at the Europeans. In 1999, the crew captured the silver medal at the Worlds and bronze at the Europeans.

Borkowski then moved to the two-person keelboat (star class) partnering Marc Pickel. The pair finished a disappointing seventh at the 2008 Beijing Games. In 1995, Borkowski won the World Championships with Stefan Meister in the non-Olympic H-keelboat class.
