Canadian weightlifter Sébastien Groulx competed in the lightweight class at international events for more than a decade. In 1996 Groulx won gold in the clean & jerk, snatch, and total at the Pan American Weightlifting Championships in Shreveport, Louisiana. Two years later he won gold in the snatch and total, along with silver in the clean & jerk at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. After just missing out on a medal at the 1999 Pan American Games he was hoping for better success at the Sydney Olympics, but finished a disappointing 15th out of the 17 athletes to compete. Despite this setback, Groulx had further success at the Pan American Weightlifting Championships, winning gold in the total in 2000 and silver in the total in 2005.
After his weightlifting career Groulx worked as a doctor. Sadly, however, he was killed in June 2025 in an air medic helicopter crash while carrying out a rescue operation in a remote part of Québec.
