Viktor Maygurov

Viktor Maygurov took up biathlon in 1985 and after the fall of the Soviet Union, because of the fierce competition for the Russian national team, he opted to represent Belarus. Maygurov competed for Belarus at two major international tournaments – the 1993 World Championships and 1994 Winter Olympics, finishing fourth with the Belarussian relay team at both tournaments. After the 1994 Winter Olympics, Maygurov was invited back to the Russian national team and represented Russia from 1995 until the end of his career in 2003.

Representing Russia, Maygurov won two Olympic bronzes (1998 relay and 2002 20 km) and was a three-time World champion (1997 pursuit and 1996/2000 relay). He also won four silvers (1996 sprint, 1999/2003 relay, 1996 team event) and one bronze (1998 team event) at the World Championships. Maygurov also won the European relay title in 1996, won eight World Cup races and his best overall World Cup finish was second in the 1995-96 season.

After finishing his sporting career, Maygurov entered local politics. In 2003, he became deputy governor of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug and from 2008-11 was chairman of the physical culture and sports committee of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. He was a member of the public chamber of the city of Khanty- Mansiysk and was president of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug Biathlon Federation. In 2010, he became a member of the IBU technical committee.
