Rob McClanahan played for the Minnesota Gophers in college, where he was known as one of the fastest skaters in college hockey. Signed by the Buffalo Sabres immediately after the Olympics, he played two years for them and their farm club in Rochester. In 1981 he was claimed on waivers by Hartford and spent most of the next season playing for their minor league teams. In February of 1982, he was traded to the New York Rangers, rejoining Olympic coach Herb Brooks. McClanahan played three seasons with the Rangers, retiring after the 1984 season. He later became a financial broker.
