When he was young David McGillivray joined the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club where he took up figure skating. In 1968 McGillivray competed at both the World Championships and the Grenoble Olympics, placing 10th and 16th, respectively. He competed at the next two editions of the World Championships before becoming the Canadian singles champion in 1970. Later that year he retired from active competitions but continued to work in the sport as a coach and judge for another decade.
Away from the ice McGillivray had a career in medicine, first studying at the University of Toronto, before working at the Montréal Children’s Hospital. He then left the hospital to work as a paediatrician in Peterborough, Ontario for a decade before returning as the hospital’s director of the emergency room.
