Crawford Merkel was the brakeman for Ray Stevens in 1934, when they won the North American 4-man Championship for the Sno Birds of Lake Placid Club. In 1935, he braked for Curtis Stevens as they won the US Championship and the North American Championship for the Lake Placid Athletic Club. Merkel worked as a waiter in Lake Placid.
