The majority of Stephen “Steve” Monteith’s ice hockey career was spent with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues from 1961 through 1969. A student on his way to earning degrees in commerce and law, he was the league’s goal leader in 1964 and 1965, the assist leader in 1967, and the points leader in 1965. His team also captured the first University Cup as winners of the intercollegiate men’s hockey championship in 1966. As of 2007, he still maintains the team’s career scoring records, with 102 goals and 147 assists. He took only two breaks from the team during this time, one during the 1962-1963 season when he played one game with the Toronto Neil McNeil Maroons of the Metro Toronto Junior Hockey League, and one to play with Team Canada at the 1968 Winter Olympics. At the tournament he played in seven games, scored one goal, and brought home a bronze medal. He signed with the Orillia Terriers of the Senior Ontario Hockey Association in 1969, but retired from active play after only two games with the team. He was inducted into the Toronto Varsity Blues Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of his 1965-1966 championship team.
