Ski jumper Karl-Heinz Munk finished ninth on the normal hill, and 21st on the large hill, at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics. That same year he had his only podium finish at the East German Championships, winning the silver medal in the normal hill event. Because of the political situation in East Germany at the time, Munk was not allowed to participate in foreign countries. Nevertheless he successfully defected to the West from a training camp in Seefeld, Austria, in 1965. He then represented West Germany at the Four Hills Tournaments from 1965-68 with limited success.
