Lou Nanne has had a legendary career in hockey. Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, he became known as “Sweet Lou from the Soo.” His family moved to Minnesota in 1960 and Nanne later played for the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1963. In 1967 he became an American citizen, making him eligible for the 1968 Winter Olympics. After a few years in the minors with the Rochester Mustangs, Nanne had a long NHL career, playing for the Minnesota North Stars from 1967-78. He played for the US at the 1976 and 1977 World Championships and the inaugural Canada Cup in 1976. After retiring, Nanne moved into the North Stars front office as general manager and served as head coach for one season, 1978-79. He was general manager for the North Stars until 1988 when he stepped down due to health concerns. He also served as manager of the US teams at the Canada Cup in 1981 and 1984. He is a member of both the US Hockey Hall of Fame and the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame.
