Tom Neely attended George Washington University. In 1961 he was in the US Army and was trying out for the ski patrol when he was spotted by the US Olympic luge team coach, who was scouting potential lugers for the sport that was débuting at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics. Neely competed in singles at Innsbruck, placing 17th. He later settled in Sun Valley, where he was a ski instructor.
