Al Opsahl played for the University of Minnesota as a defenseman from 1944-47, captaining the 1944-45 team while he was studying aeronautical engineering. Prior to the 1948 Winter Olympics, he played briefly with the St. Paul 7-Ups-Kopps and the Minneapolis Bermans of the American Amateur Hockey League. After the Olympics, he played one year (1951-52) with the Rochester Mustangs. His son, Peter Allan Opsahl, later became a top collegiate diver at the US Air Force Academy.
