Arvīds Petersons was a Latvian legend as an all-around athlete. He started playing bandy in 1923 before moving to ice hockey in 1931, at which he won seven Latvian titles. At the World University Games Petersons won gold in basketball in 1937 and volleyball in 1939. He played for Latvia as a left wing in ice hockey at the 1936 Winter Olympics and at the World Championships in 1933, 1935, and 1938-39. Petersons played his entire hockey career with Rīga teams, skating for Rīga ASK, Rīga City, Dinamo Rīga, and Daugava Rīga.
After retiring as an athlete in 1950, Petersons studied at St. Petersburg and became a basketball, ice hockey, and volleyball coach. He was the first Latvian to coach Soviet teams.
