Taking up skiing at a young age, Merritt Putman had a lengthy skiing career on the national scene that lasted from the end of the 1910s until the beginning of the 1940s. The highlight of his career, however, was when he was selected to represent Canada in both cross-country skiing and the Nordic combined at the 1928 St. Moritz Olympics. In the former discipline, he placed 41st in the 18 kilometer event, while in the latter he was 27th. Putman skied for clubs in both Montreal and Toronto, and competed in provincial tournaments in both places, but eventually settled in Ontario.
