Canadian-born ice hockey forward Roy Roedger moved to West Germany in 1979, playing with Mannheimer ERC until 1985 and winning the national title in 1980. Roedger then moved to Düsseldorfer EG until 1990, and helped them to win the national title in his final season. He was later inducted into the German Hockey Hall of Fame.
Internationally, Roedger was on the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympic squads and played at six World Championships with West Germany. In total, he won 143 international caps and scored 36 goals. In 1990 he returned to Canada and managed a sport marketing company.
Roedger achieved dubious fame through his foul on Cologne striker Steve McNeill. With a stick end stab, he injured his opponent so badly that only part of his eyesight was saved, despite several operations. Roedger was banned from playing for several games, and ordered to pay pain and suffering compensation of 200,000 German marks to McNeill.
