Doug Ross played for Lake Superior State University and later for Bowling Green, graduating in 1976. Ross never played major or minor league hockey but immediately went into coaching. He was coach at Ohio University in 1976-77, and then Kent State from 1979-81. But the bulk of his career was spent as head coach at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, where he coached from 1982-2007 and then retired.
Ross moved that program, in the deep South, from a club program up to Division I, and won numerous awards for his coaching. His head coaching record was 503-297-43, and he led UAH to two College Hockey America regular season titles and two NCAA Division I tournament berths after the program transitioned to the next level for the 1998-99 season. He also coached at many youth camps and clinics. Ross was inducted as a member of the inaugural UAH Athletics Hall of Fame Class in 2021.
