Jerry Salmi started playing professionally in 1955 with Ilves Tampere. Over the next two seasons, he also played in the British leagues, with Brighton Tigers, Southampton Vikings, and Nottingham Panthers, twice playing in the British Autumn Cup. Salmi was with Ilves Tampere through 1960, appearing during that time at three World Championships (1957-59) and the 1960 Winter Olympics. He helped them win three championships from his forward position. After the Squaw Valley Olympics Salmi played for five years in Sweden with Sundbybergs IK, Västra Frölunda, and AIK Solna. He finished his career in the 1965/66 season with HJK Helsinki. Salmi later emigrated to the United States where he died in Seattle, Washington.
