Franz Schachner competed at two Olympics, Sapporo 1972 and Innsbruck 1976, winning a doubles bronze medal with Rudolf Schmid at Innsbruck. Schachner also won two doubles bronze medals at the 1974 and 1975 World Championships. He added a silver medal in doubles at the 1970 Europeans in Hammarstrand, Sweden.
After his sporting career, Schachner worked as an innkeeper, and was a member of the city council in Liezen from 1993-95.
