Bernhard Schilter

Bernhard Schilter was a crew member of one of the two Swiss bobsleigh teams that competed in the 4-man event at the 1948 Sankt Moritz Olympic Games, finishing eighth in a field of 15 other sleds. One of the heavier people on the crew, weighing 106 kg, he underwent intensive physical training in preparation for the event in order to ensure he was appropriately conditioned for the competition. A member of the Zürcher Bob Club, Schilter was born in Bern, the son of a warehouse manager. He was a merchant by profession.

Following competing at the Olympics, Schilter spent over a year in the United States on business. During his time overseas, he took the opportunity to visit the bobsled track at Lake Placid, reporting back to the Engadiner Post that he felt it to be more difficult and dangerous compared to the one at home. Upon his return to Switzerland, he resided in Zürich.
