Frank Shaughnessy was the son of “Shag” Shaughnessy one of the legendary figures in Canadian athletics, and a two-time captain of the Notre Dame football team. Frank himself went on to become a legend in Canadian sports. Shaughnessy attended McGill University where he played hockey but was better known as an all-star halfback on the football team. Although he was really Canadian, he was able to play on the U.S. Olympic team because he carried a dual citizenship, having been born in Virginia. His career after the Olympics began with Bell Telephone and he remained with them until 1973. It was as a sports administrator that Shaughnessy is best known. He was active for many years in the Canadian Olympic Association, serving as chef de mission at five Olympic Winter Games for the Canadian team. He was vice president of that organization from 1957 through 1975, and served on the Organizing Committee of the Montreal Olympic Games. In addition he was active as an administrator in both the Canadian Ski Association and the Canadian and Quebec Golf Associations.
