Lauri Silvennoinen made his international début at the 1938 World Championship, where he was 32nd at 18 km. At the 1941 World Championships he won a gold medal as a member of the Finnish relay team and a bronze in the 18 km. In 1943 he won his first two Finnish titles – in 18 km and in relay – and also won gold in the 18 km and silver in the 50 km at the Lahti Ski Games, his only medals at that competition. In 1944 Silvennoinen again won two Finnish titles, this time at 30 km and again in the relay. His last two Finnish titles came in 1947 and 1948, both in the relay. Silvennoinen made his last international appearance at the 1948 Winter Olympics, where he skied the first leg of the silver medal winning Finnish relay team. After his sporting career he worked with the Finnish Skiing Federation in various positions and was a member of the Lahti Ski Games Executive Board. Silvennoinen was also a sergeant of both the Finnish Police and Finnish Security Police.
