A native of Montreal, Quebec Hector Sutherland was a two-time (1947 and 1951) Canadian national champion in alpine skiing’s downhill event and a member of his country’s delegation to the 1948 Winter Olympics, where he finished 23rd in the combined event and 28th in the downhill and slalom. Successful as an amateur skier, he captured the men’s title at four consecutive meets at the famed Laurentian Ski Hill in North Bay, Ontario during the 1940s. The Hector Sutherland Trophy, awarded annually to the Eastern Canada men’s junior high school alpine ski champion, was named in his honor in the 1960s. Sutherland, a graduate of Lower Canada College, was at the time the only student from the institution to have made an appearance at the Olympic Games. Outside of winter sports he also excelled at golf and tennis and, after having lived in Montreal for 50 years, moved to the province of Ontario, where he died in March 2012.
