At Mexico City in 1968, Flatwater canoeist Klaus Heinroth and Manfred Ehrhardt missed the final in the K2-1,000 metres. Despite winning their heat easily, they were eliminated in their semi-final. Between 1966 and 1969, Heinroth enjoyed three podium finishes at the East German championships in the K1-1,000 meters, but never won a national title.
