Ted Thorndike grew up around Boston. He attended Phillips Andover Academy where he captained the hockey and baseball teams and then went to Harvard. Thorndike graduated from Harvard in 1975 with a degree in English, playing on the hockey team and captaining it in his senior year. Thorndike led the Crimson to the 1974 and 1975 Ivy League titles, and they were fourth at the 1975 NCAA Championships. Thorndike tragically died young in a hunting accident.
