Oswald Tötsch was one of the best Italian skiers in the 1980s. He was first noticed when he won a slalom silver at the 1982 World Junior Championships. Totsch scored his first World Cup points in February 1983 at Markstein, again in slalom. A technical specialist, Totsch competed at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics in slalom (5th) and giant slalom (15th). He made his first World Cup podium on 13 January 1985 at Kitzbühel with a second in slalom, and he later placed ninth in GS at the 1985 World Championships in Bormio.
In the 1986-1987 season Totsch made his final two World Cup podiums, with thirds in giant slalom at Alta Badia and the slalom at Hinterstoder. He again competed at the World Championships in 1987, placing 9th in giant slalom and 11th in slalom. Totsch returned to the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, where he finished 8th in slalom and 18th in combined. He retired in early 1990 and then managed the Hotel Residence Rose and its spa and pool with his family in Prati di Vipiteno.
